The importance of spiritual health

–     “Health is a dynamic state of complete physical,
         –            mental, spiritual and social well-being and not
–         merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.

Spiritual health is an important component of our well-being and an integral aspect of the holistic health philosophy.  Physical, mental and spiritual health, all the three are deeply intertwined and have a profound effect on one another. To be vital and healthy you need to have a spiritual life. We need to have values and beliefs which we live by and strive to achieve. These values must be integrated into our work lives, home lives, and social lives. In the final analysis, its how we treat ourselves and others when no one is looking and no one knows about which tells about an individual’s spiritual life.

It’s the respect and love of mother earth which is a true reflection of the respect and love for oneself and others.

Our ‘spiritual lives’ are reflected in our relationships with ourselves, our families, and the world at large. Those without spiritual lives or fragmented spiritual lives tend to be more fearful, anxious, angry and depressed. The lack of a spiritual life can lead to illness and disease. Today we live longer than our forefathers, but we suffer more from a thousand artificial anxieties and cares. To preserve health is a moral and religious duty, for health is the society of all social virtues.

If we want to feel truly alive and open to life’s opportunities we need to look carefully at our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.  We need to identify our shortcomings and make those changes we need so that we are truly vibrating at the highest level and enjoying life to the fullest.

What is the definition of Spiritual Health?
The words “spiritual” and “health”, for many people, are two separate issues. Many people do not understand that these two issues are inextricably linked.

When you define spiritual health… you start to think about what makes you look at a person and feel that they have good spiritual health? A Healthy Spirit means so many different things to different people. For me, spirituality is a sense of wholeness, a sense of knowingness, and a sense of something far greater and more wonderful than what I see in front of me.

In a personal sense, each of us has to work out what we feel is the answer to what is spiritual health. Is it important to your health that you live your life in a way so that you feel comfortable with who you are in a spiritual sense? And what does that mean to you?

Our spirit is our essence. And it also tends to be the one thing we neglect the most. We have to make time every day to feed our spirit. When we take care of our spirit we find the path to our authentic self and ultimately to living the life we were intended to live. This is a ‘Spiritual Health’ in a true sense.

A healthy spirit takes a conscious effort. Every day you need to make it a priority to think positive and focus on your successes and not your so-called failures. One of my favorite quotes of all times is “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm”. It is your perspective that defines your happiness, not your circumstances.

Spiritual health can be many things to each individual person. One strategy to improve spiritual health is to identify the things in your life that bring you inner peace and tranquility.  Everyone is different, so what works for you, may not work for others. You may need to try many of these suggestions before you find what is comfortable for you.

You can think of spirituality as connecting to whatever you consider meaningful and holy. You can find it in God, in yourself, in other people, in nature, art or kindness. Whatever you focus on, spirituality offers many possible benefits, including better mood, less anxiety and depression-and even fewer aches and illnesses.

The importance of spiritual health

–  Spirituality, in a narrow sense, concerns itself with matters of the spirit. Spiritual matters are those involving humankind’s ultimate nature, not only as material biological organisms but as beings with a unique relationship to that which is beyond both time and the material world. As such the spiritual is traditionally contrasted with the material, the temporal and the worldly. A perceived sense of connection forms a central defining characteristic of spirituality — connection to a metaphysical reality greater than oneself, which may include an emotional experience of religious awe and reverence or such states as Nirvana. Equally importantly, spirituality relates to matters of sanity and of psychological health.

Spirituality is a tangible reality and not a common idealism in the trap of meditation or fantasy. It is the way you find meaning, hope, comfort and inner peace in your life. Many people find spirituality through religion. Some find it through music, art or a connection with nature. Others find it in their values and principles. It includes all aspects of the daily life of the believer. Each of us has a spirit and, therefore, a spiritual life, and we must be conscious of this fact. We consider that spirituality is not directly related to our physical health because it is not its target, but to the spiritual health, that is important for each of us.

“Joy, temperance and repose, slam the door on the doctor’s nose.” —- Proverb

How is spirituality related to health?

No one really knows for sure. However, it seems the body, mind, and spirit are connected. The health of any one of these elements seems to affect the health of the others. When we feel spiritually connected and fulfilled, everything in our lives including physical and emotional pain is easier to deal with. We feel lighter and happier.
There’s no denying it – when we feel connected and balanced spiritually we feel better physically and emotionally. Nourishing our spiritual self is as important as food, water, and exercise.
Some researchers have started believing that things such as positive beliefs, comfort, and strength gained from religion, meditation, and prayer contribute to healing and a sense of well-being. Improving your spiritual health may not cure an illness, but it may help you feel better, prevent some health problems and help you cope with illness or death.  When our families face tough situations, including health problems, their religious beliefs and practices can help them fight feelings of helplessness, restore meaning and order to life situations, and promote regaining a sense of control. For some families, spirituality can be a powerful and important source of strength.

How can we improve our spiritual health?

If you want to improve your spiritual health, you may want to try the following ideas. Remember, though, that everyone is different, so what works for others may not work for you. Do what is comfortable for you.

a). Identify the things in your life that give you a sense of inner peace, comfort, strength, love, and connection.

b). Set aside time every day to do the things that help you spiritually. These may include doing community service or volunteer work, praying, meditating, singing devotional songs, reading inspirational books, taking nature walks, having quiet time for thinking; doing yoga, playing a sport or attending religious services.

Many people think that the search for the spiritual is a big mystery or requires attendance at retreats or meetings with great spiritual gurus, but that is not the case. Spirituality is an integral part of everyone and can be found in all aspects of our lives. We only need to become aware. Spiritual development is a process that takes place throughout the course of one’s life.
